G.Skill back on the SSD scene with the Phoenix III

G.Skill used to be a competitor in the SSD market back in the SATA II 3G days yet it has been absent since then. It’s Phoenix and Phoenix Pro SSDs were all MLC and Sandforce based SATA II drives.

Now G.Skill is coming back, but its doing so in a rather silent fashion. Without a single murmur from its press department, the product page for the new Phoenix III was added to the G.Skill website.

According to sources the reason why G.Skill had been absent from the SSD market for so long was due to the fact it felt the Sandforce controller was too unstable and that there was too much competition.  Well the stability of the Sandforce controller has certainly improved a lot, but as to competition – there is more than ever.

G.Skill’s new Phoenix III SSDs come in 120GB and 240GB capacities. They offer your Sandforce-typical read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. The controller is the SF-2281 which is found in every other SATA III SSD these days. The drives are 7mm thick, use MLC flash, come with a 3 year warranty and are provided with a 3.5″ converting bracket.
