Final Thoughts
Price
At the time of writing, I struggled to find an accurate retail price in the UK, although I saw some as “out of stock” in the region of £40. I did, however, find the G.Skill Ripjaws MX780 mouse in stock at Newegg.com in the US, with a retail price of just $59.99. That’s crazy cheap for a mouse of this specification, putting it in line with some of the more “budget-friendly” gaming mouse options from Madcatz, Corsair and Razer, to name but a few.
Overview
When I first heard that G.Skill were moving into the world of peripherals, I was a little surprised to say the least. I first caught a look at their gaming hardware at Computex early this year and it certainly looked pretty attractive, but a trade show isn’t always the best place test out hardware. G.Skill have a solid reputation behind them with many award-winning products, so I was certainly hoping to see a similar level of quality in today’s review and I wasn’t disappointed.
The build quality on the MX780 is as good as it gets, with a mixture of grippy plastics coating the nicely finished aluminium chassis. The switches are sublime to use, and the sensor is honestly as good as you could ever hope for. The addition being able to customise the mouse is also very welcome, such as being able to raise the rear section of the mouse to better suit your hand size and grip type, the addition of the 2 x 4.5g weights and the magnetic locking side-panels to change the grips and even switch the mouse between left and right-handed configurations; it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design.
The price is certainly competitive as the MX780 has a huge array of features for any high-end gaming mouse, and even more so given its respective price range. Sure, G.Skill have got a lot of work to do to convert brand loyal gamers away from some of the more established peripheral brands, but at this price, with this many features and with the high-end performance we’ve seen today, the MX780 will go head-to-head with any of the big name products, including ones that are twice the price; G.Skill are doing more than just holding their own in this fight.
Pros
- Excellent build quality
- Exceptional sensor performance
- Very competitive price
- Customisable ergonomics
- Left and Right hand suitable
- Weight tuning system
- RGB lighting
Cons
- Limited availability in UK
“G.Skill may be new to the peripherals market, but the MX780 is proof that they’ve got what it takes to take on the biggest names in the business. The MX780 is one of the best value and featured packed gaming mice on the market today.”
Thank you G.Skill for providing us with this sample.
