G.Skill TridentX DDR3 2666MHz 8GB Memory Kit Review

Before we step into the performance and overclocking side of things, we want to take a minute to talk about the styling and design that G.Skill have included on the TridentX kit and this includes the addition of the Turbulence II memory cooler as well. The kit overall has an amazing look to them when paired up with an Asus ROG board which for anyone buying an enthusiast kit like this, they are more than likely going to be pairing it with an Asus ROG board, such as the Maximus V board we used to test this memory with today.

Overall, I had a great time with this kit today as it showed some really strong performance, that actually obliterated the competition, and some of the memory kits we’ve looked at recently from other brands. Sure it has a faster speed, but it also has an attractive price tag to match, with it currently retailing for £125/$169.99 and that gives a much better reason to buy this over similar memory from the likes of Corsair’s Dominator Platinum kit or Avexir’s Core Series kits which we’ve gracefully awarded in the past.

A lot of users still have this belief that 8GB isn’t enough memory for them and that 16GB is a minimum, but even extreme gaming surveys from Steam and the likes show that 8GB is still used quite often by the majority of consumers today and that’s exactly who this kit appeals to. The welcome addition of the Turbulence II cooler opens up a huge area for performance and of course overclocking and while talking about performance, it is worth noting that this kit has given us some of the strongest results we’ve ever seen, and we know that we said that about previous kits in the past, and that’s exactly why G.Skill sent us this particular set of modules as they knew for a fact that their modules could do better, and they proved that today.

Overclocking wise, we fell just short of pushing this kit to 2800MHz, but still saw some really high speeds at 2786MHz which is the fastest speed we’ve had out of any memory kit that has passed through our labs, so we have to congratulation G.Skill on this too.

I’m trying to find some more words to put into this conclusion but being honest I’m finding it quite hard if truth be told. Honestly I am finding myself quite speechless as to how G.Skill can offer a kit of this performance and overclockability for such a low price and I still can’t quite get my head around it, and I doubt any other competitor of G.Skill could even get close to this kit for the same price. It seems that G.Skill have produced the perfect memory module kit and we can only hope that their higher capacity kits can work on the success of this 8GB set of modules.

The bottom line is; that this kit offers great styling, fantastic functionality with the included Turbulence II memory cooler, performance that it seems no one will be able to rival, overclockability that should see this kit constantly popping up on HWBot and the like and one of the most attractive price points we’ve seen in a while. With that we’re happy to give G.Skill and their TridentX 2666MHz 8GB kit our Editor’s Choice Award and even with that in mind, we wish we had an award higher than that, as this kit really is one of the greatest products we’ve ever tested, and yes, you can quote us on that.
