Gab Social Media Website Returns After Hosting Ban

Gab Social Media Website Returns

If you’re not familiar with the Gab social media website, let me give you the outline of it in a nutshell. Gab looks to provide a social media platform within the remit that ‘anything goes’. Like how Reddit or Twitter used to be. While there are, clearly, a few exceptions to that remit, Gab has been a huge advocate of ‘free speech’ no matter how stupid or misguided it might be. Like it or not (particularly the practicality), you have to at least respect the remit.

For a little over a week though, the social media site disappeared from the internet. Due to an incident regarding one of its members and a shooting at a Synagogue in the US, both PayPal and the website’s host (GoDaddy) withdrew their services from the social media site. As such, it didn’t have a home.

Well, in a report via The Verge, Gab is back!

Abandoned Services

With the loss of their domain registration and web hosting, Gab went offline on the 28th October. After just over a week off-line it only returned last Sunday. While it is a little unclear who they now have hosting the website, it’s certainly been a rough week for the social media site. With so many necessary online companies withdrawing their services, particularly PayPal, with these acting essentially as the lifeblood of the website, I’m sure they’ll be glad to be back up and running.

Should I Join Gab?

Well, in a nutshell, not if you’re easily offended. As above, the social media platform prides itself on much less regulation, moderation and censoring that the more mainstream alternatives. It’s a factor that has made the site very popular with a number of people. It has also, of course, also made it popular for those who have opinions that would warrant a mental health evaluation. Put simply, it’s not for the faint of heart!

For the moment though, it is back. How long it will last though is anyone’s guess!
