Priced at around £70 from most major retailers, the Gamdias Hephaestus isn’t cheap, but in terms of features, build quality and performance it is right up there with the best. You can pick up a FREQ5, Siberia or an Astro A30 for around the same money, which are all great headsets in their own right, but none offer the same level of bass reproduction as the Hephaestus. It really is a matter of preference, as it’s hard to find a bad headset at this price range, but the latest offering from Gamdias is certainly competitive.
Overview
I absolutely love this headset, sure I’ve heard a lot of great headsets over the last few years and this one in many ways doesn’t sound much different from a fair few of them, but it still manages to stand out from the crowd regardless. The sound quality is top-notch, sure it’s not audiophile grade, but it packs enough punch to leave you feeling satisfied while watching a movie, listening to music or most importantly, gaming. The vibrational drivers are a nice touch and really work better than you might think at providing some genuine bone shaking frequencies.
The sound quality is great, that much we’ve covered, but the overall aesthetics of this headset are unlike anything else. For starters, this is the first headset I’ve ever seen that comes with a pair of aluminium radiator fins to help keep the drivers and your ears cool. Maybe that’s just a load of marketing nonsense to some extent, but in all honestly, my ears didn’t get warm while wearing the headset, so maybe their onto something. The thing I care about though is how those radiators look, they’re like the air intakes of a fighter jet right on the side of your head and from a style point of view I think the look pretty awesome. All the parts of the headset, cable, microphone and in-line controller have a premium quality finish to them, everything feel really solid and durable without making the headset overly heavy, so it should survive more than a few knocks and bumps with ease.
“They may be a relatively new brand to the market, but Gamdias are really going the extra mile to carve a name out for themselves, and if they keep turning out products that are even half as good as the Hephaestus, I’ll be very happy indeed. If you want to put on a headset that not only looks unique, but also makes you go “wow”, then you need to at least try out the Hephaestus.”
