Game of Thrones Was Forced to Cut Epic Battle

The two showrunners of HBO hit Game of Thrones have revealed that they were forced to cut a spectacular battle from the show. According to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the co-showrunners of the George R.R. Martin adaptation, the scene was to take place during the first season and was set to follow “imp” Tyrion Lannister’s point-of-view as he accompanied gigantic foot-soldier The Mountain into battle.
“Thinking back to season one, there was supposed to be this big battle,” Benioff and Weiss told the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via Digital Spy). “Tyrion Lannister follows The Mountain into combat – and we were really excited. We were going to have the camera at Peter Dinklage’s eye level and have him follow this giant, The Mountain, into battle and just see everything.”
Rather than lamenting the absence of the scene, though, Benioff and Weiss both agree that the show was better off without it since the budget of the first season wouldn’t have been enough to realise it in the same manner as “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards” achieved.
“Frankly, we just run out of money and we couldn’t do it. So that was one of the big battles from the book that we hoped we could get on screen and we never managed to do it,” the pair revealed, adding, “In a way, I think it’s probably better that we couldn’t do it, because it never would have measured up to what we were able to do later.”
