At school, I was pretty handy with a calculator. With skill and application, I could easily get the display to say hello, boobs or even boobies. Admittedly a bit of imagination was required, but it was there.
Playing musical tunes on them though? No, sorry. Beyond my remit and I even play the piano!
YouTube channel ‘It’s A Small World’, however, has made a specialty of creating musical tunes using nothing but calculators.
For their latest video, they decided to cover what is perhaps their most impressive to date. Utilising four Senbonzakura AR-7778 calculators, they have been able to recreate a highly impress rendition of the theme tune to the popular TV series, Game of Thrones.
Given that it’s basically two years until we get to see the season finale, it’s not as if us fans of the series have anything better to do is it?
Now of course, the Senbonzakura AR-7778 isn’t exactly your standard calculator. The fact that ‘It’s a small world’ has been able to seemingly glue four of them together and with a high degree of skill get out a decent tune is remarkable.
In the video below, the rendition lasts around 1 minute 30 seconds. Although I haven’t even timed it, it certainly sounds like roughly the full length of the opening.
On previous videos, the ‘musician’ has covered themes from video games, Pokemon and even takes requests.
As above, it certainly kills the time while we wait for the TV show to return. I would say wait for George R R Martin to release the next book, but frankly, I’ve borderline given up on that.
What do you think? What song would you like to hear played on a calculator? Any particular requests? – Let us know in the comments (we won’t play them on a calculator for you though).
