GameFace Labs Could Unify All VR Platforms

The VR market is becoming increasingly crowded. Between HTC Vive, Oculus Rift (and another Oculus VR headset on the way), Samsung Gear VR, and Google Daydream – all serving similar but divergent requirements – it’s tough to know which to go for. Plus, each runs on their own separate platform; Oculus, SteamVR, or Daydream. There’s a new player in town, though, and it hopes to bring unity to the virtual reality market. GameFace Labs has announced that it is developing a VR system to work with all the major platforms.

EP1 – GameFace Labs’ “Hybrid” VR Headset

GameFace Labs dubs its headset, the EP1, as the “first hybrid standalone virtual reality console with Lighthouse positional tracking for SteamVR and Android”. The EP1 headset sports an NVIDIA Tegra SOC. In addition, the headset features two Samsung 90Hz 2,560 x 1,440 display panels. It supports SteamVR, ReVive (which allows access to Oculus titles), and, being Android-based, Daydream.

EP1 Features

  • Android OS
    • Custom Nougat & Daydream ready
  • 120° Field of View
    • Little-to-no colour distortion helps to alleviate simulator sickness
  • Portable
    • Untethered VR without pricey computer or phone, 7+ hours gameplay
  • NVIDIA Tegra SoC
    • More powerful than two Xbox 360s strapped to your face
  • Augmented Reality
    • Stereo 3D cameras for hand tracking, AR & holographic experiences
  • Valve SteamVR
    • Lighthouse tracking in Android and PC environments
  • Display Panels
    • Samsung 90Hz 2,560 x 1,440 (x2)

EP1 is entering early access. As of yet, there is no release date. However, GameFace Labs is taking dev kit requests now.
