Gearbox Software has resurrected acclaimed real-time strategy PC games Homeworld and Homeworld 2 by releasing Homeworld Remastered Collection today.
The collection includes HD remasters of Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with remade cinematics and audio, plus the original releases from 1999 and 2003, respectively.
Though new material was created for the remastered games, Gearbox tried very hard to remain faithful to the spirit and feel of the originals.
Brian Martel, chief creative officer at Gearbox Software, says, “Our goal was to make sure that the feelings of the original games would stay true to the originals when updating. So we knew we had to keep the ships the same for sure. Since the ships were the stars of the game, they had to be amazing. And then after that, it was all about getting the best modern rendering capabilities into the engine.”
“We tried very hard not to alter it much at all,” Martel continued. “We tried to infer a lot of the details from the low pixel information in the original textures. And then lastly we ran the ships by [original art director] Rob Cunningham, and he gave the artist on the Remastered team tons of amazing and helpful art direction.”
Homeworld Remastered Collection will be available later today for PC through Steam, priced £26.99, but is on sale for £22.94 until 6pm GMT (25th February).
