Gears of War: E-Day Trailer Sparks Debate Over Real-Time Rendering Claims

The recent reveal of the Gears of War: E-Day trailer has stirred up a significant debate in the gaming community. Initially showcased as “in-engine footage,” it was later revealed that the trailer was not rendered in real-time. This has led to considerable confusion and backlash among fans.

Clarification from The Coalition

A spokesperson from The Coalition clarified the situation in an interview with GameSpot. They stated, “The Gears of War: E-Day trailer was made in collaboration across The Coalition, Blur Studios, and GNet using in-game models, textures, and environments—all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It was not captured in real-time as some have suggested.”

Keighley’s Tweet

Geoff Keighley, a well-known figure in the gaming industry, tweeted about the trailer, describing it as a CG piece using in-game assets from Unreal Engine 5. His tweet sparked outrage among console war enthusiasts who accused him of downplaying the developers’ efforts.

Xbox marketing director Guy Welch responded to the controversy by emphasizing that the trailer was developed with in-game models and environments. However, he did not explicitly confirm whether it was pre-rendered or not, leading to further confusion.

Microsoft eventually stepped in to clarify, stating through a spokesperson that the trailer was indeed pre-rendered, not captured in real-time. This statement aimed to put an end to the ongoing debate and defend Keighley’s original comments.
