Don’t you just hate it when you pour your last bowl of cereal, throw the box in the bin and forget to order some more? No, I don’t either, because like a normal person I remember to do my online shopping weekly, but that hasn’t stopped someone from creating the GeniCan. This “smart” bit scans your trashes barcodes, adding the items to a virtual shopping list, where it will then automatically order the item again from Amazon.
‘GeniCan’s mission is to simplify the lives of busy families,’ says Rob Griffin, co-founder of GeniCan. ‘GeniCan creates shopping lists easily and automatically, saving them time and money.’ and ‘Dash Replenishment saves our customers even more time by automatically ordering items. Now they can reorder items directly from their garbage can and recycle bin at the perfect time: the moment the item is being disposed of.’ he added.
Now, that’s not a terrible idea, but does anyone really need it? At $124.99 they’re not exactly cheap, and given that I have two bins, one for general waste and one for recycling, I’d be running almost $250 for a bin that is likely to be more of an inconvenience than anything else.
With items like Amazon Echo/Dot on the market, I can simply say “Alexa, order me some AAA batteries” and it’ll do it, and the dot is only $49.99, and I already have a couple of dustbins, so I’m already making savings and have the convenience the bin offers.
Of course, the bin doesn’t scan everything. If you run out of an item, you scan it on the bin yourself before you throw it in, but I can still see my kids scanning their sweet wrappers before they bin them, only for me to have to go cancelling orders. It’ll also text you when the bin is full, but again, I would know this having put an item in the bin and seeing that item was at the top of the bin…
Can anyone help me out here, who the heck needs this? Let us know if you’re already rushing to place your order for a smart bin!
GeniCan is available in three colors – red, black and white – and can be purchased online for $124.99
