It’s been a bit of a mixed bag in regards to the Ghostbusters franchise in recent years. We had the excellent Ghostbusters game, which was released in 2009, and then, of course, we had the confused re-boot nightmare that was the 2016 film.
Some positive news, might, however, be on the way as a mobile augmented reality (AR) game is on the way!
When we look at the history of Ghostbusters, outside of the original film, it has all been a very hit and miss affair. While a lot of franchises from the 80’s have had highs and lows since the original film Ghostbusters have largely been below par. The only highlights we have seen over the years was the decent cartoon series and the excellent 2009 game. Between those, however, the franchise hasn’t had the love it deserved.
An augmented reality game, therefore, might be the shot in the arm to bring this franchise back to the level it deserves to be at.
Sadly, animated or video games would appear to be on the only medium we can hope for a Ghostbusters revival. Although an AR game for the franchise is surprising, it’s certainly not a bad idea.
At present, we have very little details about it, except that revealed in the above teaser trailer or the official website. The website, it should be said, is profoundly void of any information.
What is rumored is that the Ghostbuster AR game will be something similar in style to the recent Pokemon Go. On the surface, that seems like a pretty good idea, although it should be noted that while Pokemon Go was a hit for a while, it’s hype went away just as quick.
We may never see a new live-action film that the franchise deserves. We certainly didn’t see it in the 2016 release. The closest I think we came was in the 2009 game (which is well worth playing if you haven’t already). As such, an AR game could represent a major and bold new step for the franchise.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Ghostbusters? Would you like to see an AR mobile game? In addition, do you think the franchise has a future? – Let us know in the comments!
