Giant Robots? – I want one!
America fighting Japan in a giant robot battle sounds more like a synopsis for an anime or film. It certainly doesn’t sound like something that would happen. Well, not outside of the TV show Robot Wars. It is, however, a reality which for fans of robots, science fiction, and technology, in general, will love and probably want a piece of the action. When we reported the battle last week, we have been anxiously awaiting the results. Would it be awesome or would it be overhyped? – First, just a little background.
In the US, there is a company called MegaBots Inc. At MegaBots they, pretty much, do one thing. Built giant battle robots. Before you go running off to check, they’re not hiring at the moment. I already looked.
Having hit the headlines 2 years ago with their piloted mech robot, they wanted to set new challenges. As such, they decided to look to Japan to find a competitor and of course, as Japan loves its robots, it did not take long.
A company called Suidobashi Heavy Industries answered the call and created the Kuratas robot to challenge the USA’s Mark 2 Megabot.
These are anything but Love Robots.
Piloted robot fighting is here!
It’s a definite geek alert, but who cares, giant robots fighting and competing against each other is cool. The whole event was broadcast live on Twitch and gained a much larger audience than was expected.
The popularity of the event almost guarantees further fights in the future and perhaps even more international competitors.
I will not spoil the result for you, but I have copied the video in below. Trust me, it is well worth watching. If they keep releasing content like this, we might need to hire some of them robot reporters as we’ll be pretty glued to these events.
What do you think? Are giant robot battles a fad or could there be a future in this as a tech sport? Let us know in the comments!
