Gigabyte Announce Updated Nvidia 1060 With GDDR5X

Around a week ago, rumours began to emerge that Gigabyte was working on one ‘last hurrah’ for the Nvidia 1060 graphics card. This wouldn’t necessarily represent the first time either as around 18-months after launch, a moderately improved version of the 1060 was released. It was a move that made the Nvidia 1060 one of the most popular GPUs in recent memory.

With the 20XX range of graphics cards firmly underway now though, all manufacturers are going to be looking away from the 10XX range.

In a report via Videocardz though, Gigabytes updated GTX 1060 has now been revealed and it will include GDDR5X memory.

Before You Get Excited

Before you get too excited about a brand new GPU, there are some factors that need to be considered. While the newer model will include a boost on the VRAM performance and a GP104 GPU chip rather than GP106, this is still essentially just an improvement. In the same way that the upcoming AMD 590 is simply an improvement on the 580, this should be viewed in, pretty much, exactly the same manner.

Why Release It At All?

Well, firstly, the 20XX graphics cards are expensive. As much as you might love them, you can’t deny that. As such, there is still plenty of life left in the entire 10XX range. It may, however, just come down to much simpler factors. Rumours suggest that Gigabyte had a rather large stock of 1060’s in their factory. As such, pushing out one final ‘improved’ model might help them shift as much of it as possible.

Either way though, we look forward to seeing just how well this ‘improved’ version will do.
