Gigabyte is an associate member of the Intel Internet of Things Solutions Alliance and as such it isn’t a big surprise that they brought along their EL-20 IoT gateway solution to Computex 2016. The EL-20 recently got a CPU upgrade with the new phase pf Intel Pentium and Celeron processors based on the Braswell D stepping.
The two new CPU options for the EL-20 are the Intel Pentium N3710 and Intel Celeron N3060 processors that can deliver higher performance on both compute tasks and graphics while maintaining their current thermal and power envelopes. That’s all thanks to Intel’s new 14nm process.
There are three base models available with a slight variation in the specifications, but all three EL-20 IoT gateways support an unprecedented 16GB DDR3L-1333 or 1600 memory through the two onboard SO-DIMM slots. This allows special usage scenarios for digital signage or other autonomous systems have more flexibility at a lower cost, compared to other Pentium or Celeron based solutions.
The top model is the EL-20-3700-32GB that features a quad-core 1.6GHz Pentium N3710 CPU with a burst speed up to 2.56GHz as well as 32GB onboard eMMC memory. The other two models are based on the Celeron N3060 CPU and come with either 32GB or 8GB onboard eMMC memory. The CPU has two cores, a base clock of 1.6GHz, and a burst speed up to 2.48GHz.
The two Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports are based on the Realtek RTL8111HS controller. Wireless connections can be provided through a dual-band Intel WiFi 802.11b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0 module. The EL-20 has room for one full-sized Mini-PCIe module which could be either a 3G module or mSATA storage. and 1xSD-Card
Overall, the EL-20 has an impressive range of connection options for its size. You get an SDXC card reader, four USB 3.0 ports, dual-HDMI and eDP display connectors, as well as COM connections. There are plenty of OS choices too as it fully supports Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Android 5.1.
