Gigabyte’s Super Overclock card has caught the attention of enthusiasts recently thanks to its highly unique cooling design, the Windforce 5X cooler. The Cooler occupies 3 slots in width much like the Direct CU II cooler that we saw on the GTX 580 and HD 6970. Yet the fan design is unique as it seems to be designed for a total earache, at least that’s the judgement many have come too. Featuring five 40mm fans facing upwards exhausting hot air off the card’s heatsink arrangement, which consists of a vapour chamber and five 8mm heat pipes.
To many it would probably make more sense to stick with the efficient heat sink design but with a couple of larger 92mm/80mm fans much like what we’ve seen on previous Windforce cards. It is a well recognised fact that smaller fans have to spin faster to provide equivalent airflow to that of larger fans, faster spinning results in larger noise output. However, we won’t know whether the card truly is efficient or noisy until some testing has taken place. The card comes with a back plate as standard and it is expected to become available in the near future.
