Ransomware is undoubtedly one of the biggest and arguably prevalent online threats at the moment. While it’s troublesome enough for individuals who unwittingly put it on their private system, it’s clearly hugely more disruptive for major businesses and industries. – While there have been many high-profile instances of successful ransomware attacks on major corporations in recent years, however, following a report via TechSpot, it seems that Gigabyte has just become the latest name added to the list, with around 112GB of their data having just been stolen/encrypted.
Gigabyte Ransomware Attack
Following reports from the notorious ransomware group “RansomExx”, they are claiming that following a recent successful attack, they have just successfully stolen/encrypted around 112GB of seemingly highly sensitive information. In confirming the news, Gigabyte has said that through the utilisation of backups, they have been able to successfully restore their servers without any notable disruption to their business.
So, with this in mind, is the problem solved? Well, the short answer is a definite no. With the group claiming that they have obtained this 112GB of information, they are running the standard ransomware threat of telling Gigabyte that if they don’t pay them, they will release this stolen data to the public.
What Kind of Data Are We Talking About?
At the time of writing, neither Gigabyte nor the ransomware group “RansomExx” has fully disclosed much regarding the information that was contained within this 112GB. However, it is said that it contained various sensitive communications with Nvidia, Intel, and AMD. It also included various products/upcoming releases that have not been publicly disclosed and remain currently under NDA’s or confidentiality agreements.
So, with this in mind, it begs the question, will Gigabyte pay up? Well, here we enter something of a difficult area. Very few companies clearly like the idea of having to pay a third party to protect their stolen data. Then again though, we know for a fact it has happened in the past and, in many instances, such ‘deals’ are often kept quiet. The bottom line is that we’ll know for certain probably within about 2-4 weeks. Specifically, if any highly confidential documents of theirs start appearing online. – Of course, though, paying these ransomware groups is never a good idea because you are, after all, feeding the beast that is effectively trying to kill you!
