Gigabyte Launches the C246-WU4 Server Motherboard

Workstation Server Board for Intel Xeon-E CPUs

Following the X299 WU8 Workstation motherboard spotted online a few weeks ago, Gigabyte now has one using the Intel C246 chipset as well. The C246 chipset is specifically for Intel’s Xeon E series processors, ideal for entry level servers. This is of course, more affordable than X299-chipset based workstations since the C246 chipset has more similarities with Intel’s mainstream desktop Z370-chipset platform.

The C246 chipset supports dual-channel RAM, but with ECC support of course. In comparison, the X299 platform supports quad-channel memory. Since this motherboard is for servers, component compatibility is vital. Which is why GIGABYTE partners very closely with memory vendors to ensure that it does. According to the company, they have verified over 1000+ different modules to ensure performance on this motherboard.

What Other Features Does the Gigabyte C246-WU4 Motherboard Have?

The C246-WU4 uses a standard ATX form factor measuring 305 x 244mm. It has four physical PCIe x16 slots supporting up to 4-way CrossFire and has a legacy PCI slot available. There are also dual COM port headers and an LPT1 port header adding to the legacy component support.

As for storage, there are 10x SATA3 6GB/s ports available, plus dual M.2 slots. One of these M.2 slots supports PCIe 3×2 or SATA SSD modules, while the other supports up to PCIe 3×4 SSDs.

There are also dual Intel Gigabit Server LAN ports at the rear with cFOS network acceleration software support.

The rear IO has dual DisplayPorts which have 4K UHD output support, there are also six USB 3.1 ports, one of which is a Type-C. Plus, two more USB 2.0 ports and a legacy PS/2 port for peripherals.

How Much is the Gigabyte C246-WU4 Motherboard?

There is no pricing information available for this server motherboard at this time.
