Gigabyte Overclocks Intel Core i7 to 7.5GHz

Gigabyte has achieved a mindblowing 7.5GHz overclock on Intel’s new Core i7-7740K. The company achieved the feat using its new Aorus X299-SOC Champion motherboard and lashings of liquid nitrogen. The five overclockers involved also broke new 3DMark06 world records during the feat. Intel unveiled the i7-7740K at Computex 2017 last week.

Pushing the Intel Core i7-7740K to 7.5GHz

Gigabyte’s OC Lab team attained this triumph using:

• Intel Core i7-7740K
• Gigabyte Aorus X299-SOC Champion
• 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 4333MHz RAM
• Aorus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition 11G
• Corsair AX 1500i PSU

The processor was then cooled, using liquid nitrogen, to around 250^oC:

To achieve the 3DMark records, though, the team swapped out the Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM for G.Skill Trident-Z 3600C17. Another was attained using two GTX 1080 Ti cards in SLI.

In order to push past the 7.5GHz barrier, the team of overclockers employed liquid helium to drop temperatures to a mind numbingly low -250° Celsius. The 3DMark06 world record was broken not once but twice over the past week, using different hardware configurations, subsequently making one of those scores a global first.
