Gigabyte has used the Aorus brand on a number of product categories including laptops and peripherals. From what I’ve encountered, it seems the name signifies the company’s premium offerings which employ a more distinctive appearance. According to the Taiwanese industry journal DigiTimes, Gigabyte is trying to strengthen the Aorus brand to compete with ASUS’ ROG series and the MSI Gaming range. The article states new graphics cards and motherboards will be released sporting the Aorus name from January 2017:
“Gigabyte will begin selling Aorus branded motherboards in early January 2017, starting with Intel’s new 200-series chipsets, while graphics cards will need to wait until AMD and Nvidia release new high-end GPUs.”
This is an interesting move and makes sense given the popularity of competing brands. Hopefully, Aorus products will have some form of unique features and possibly incorporate a distinctive aesthetic spanned across different sections. It seems like the company’s first motherboard will have some kind of water cooling support as its focus and target extreme users. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the name develops over time and adoption rate among consumers compared to the highly popular ROG range. Expect to hear more details very soon and possibly further images of the first Aorus motherboard.
