Gigabyte has now announced their first set of BRIX mini-PCs sporting Intel Kaby Lake-R CPUs. Intel’s Kaby Lake-R i5-825OU and i7-8550U are highly efficient 15W TDP mobile parts that are ideal not just for notebooks but for compact PCs like the BRIX as well.
Specifically, the i5-8250U is 4-core, 8-thread CPU with 1.6GHz base clock and 3.4GHz Turbo clock. The i7-855OU on the other hand is also a 4-core, 8-thread CPU but runs at 1.8GHz base with a 4.0GHz Turbo. The i7 model also has the slight advantage of having a larger SmartCache (8MB vs 6MB).
All models are expandable, with room for an M.2 drive. However, only the BRIX “H” models have the 2.5″ drive mounting expansion option. Understandably, they are also slightly taller than the other models (4.7″ x 4.4″ x 1.4″ vs 4.7″ x 4.4″ x 1.8″).
The four models also are similar in having a pair of SO-DIMM DDR4 memory slots, a mini-DP and HMI port for display output, as well as an 802.11ac WiFi card pre-installed in the Key-E M.2 slot.
As for connectivity, all models have a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit ethernet and audio jacks for a microphone and headphone.
