GoDaddy is a world famous successful domain registrar and website hosting company but its reputation and business has taken a big hit in the past few weeks. The pro-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) stance taken by GoDaddy has cost it dearly. Thousands of anti-SOPA GoDaddy customers took action and across Thursday and Friday of last week it is now confirmed that over 37000 domains were transferred out of GoDaddy to other companies. The mass movement started after a list of pro and anti-SOPA companies was published and GoDaddy appeared on the Pro list.
GoDaddy has now changed its stance on the act going from supporting it to taking a neutral stance after spending months assisting with the creation, drafting and development of SOPA.
In a recent statement, Warren Adelman, the company’s newly appointed CEO said: “Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation – but we can clearly do better. […] It’s very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it.”
