While Goldeneye 007 is undoubtedly one of the most beloved gaming titles of all time, it is more than a little bizarre that in the circa 25 years since it was originally released, and particularly so in this modern trend of retro remakes and remasters, nothing has ever happened with it. Well, nothing outside the remits of fan projects at least. – Over the last 6 months, however, more and more rumours have started appearing online suggesting that an official HD update was on the way. – Just one of them, merely, for example, appeared last month a whole bunch of new Xbox achievements appeared that were almost certainly based upon the Goldeneye title.
With this in mind, therefore, is a modern reboot of Goldeneye 007 on the way? Well, following a report via a highly-reliable source, the answer appears to be yes. And more so, something may be confirmed within the next few weeks!
Following comments from VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb, courtesy of VGC, he has cited apparently inside information stating that not only is a Goldeneye 007 HD Remaster currently in the works but that formal confirmation of it (and perhaps even a release) might be made within the next few weeks. More so, rather than Nintendo (for whom it was originally released on their N64 system), it looks more likely that Microsoft will be taking the fanfare!
“I think that Microsoft is going to be the one to announce that first. I think this game is probably coming pretty soon, I’m thinking next couple of weeks.”
While this might, on the surface, seem a bit unusual, it should be noted that Microsoft owns Rare who created the original title. As such, a remaster, presuming they are utilising the original source code, does seem a probable and not overly inconvenient release.
A more polished iteration, with some improvements on the controls, would undoubtedly be a very popular gaming release for those of us with more than a few nostalgic memories of the original. – While some may be disappointed that this latest news is pointing more towards a remaster rather than a full-blown remake, however, on the whole, Goldeneye 007 can probably still work and be a highly enjoyable experience with just a few modern up-to-date quality of life improvements. Chief among which, of course, is the ability to play it on something other than the N64 or via emulation which, to date, has pretty much been our only means of accessing memory lane.
If this source is proven accurate, therefore, we may, fingers crossed, get an official confirmation of Goldeneye 007 Remastered within the next 2-4 weeks. – And presuming it has online multiplayer, I’m all over this! Just don’t go giving me any of those shenanigans of only against me with Oddjob while I get stuck with Jaws!
