It seems that once or twice a year, we are greeted with the news that something is on the way to destroy planet earth. Most often taking the form of an asteroid (of increasingly hyperbolic sizes) and occasionally aliens, it seems that in one way or another, some people won’t be happy until their predictions are proven right.
In a strange twist though, there is actually some good news. In a report via CNET, an asteroid believed to be on course to hit earth in 2026 is going to miss! Planet Earth can breathe again!
Asteroid 2017 RH16 was originally predicted to come within 2,628 miles of Earth. In space terms, this is way too close for comfort. In geographical terms, this is only a little over the distance between Edinburgh and Moscow (as the crow flies). This should give you a rough idea as to just how ‘squeaky bum time’ this was.
With it now due to miss though, if you were not aware of it, you don’t need to worry regardless. Isn’t that nice?
Fresh research has now determined that the asteroid will now only come within about 2 million miles of Earth. It will be at it’s closest on or around the 31st of August 2026. So that will be at least something for you stargazers to look forward to. Given that this was at the top of the list in terms of ‘asteroid threats’ though, it’s good news all around really!
