Google Decides to Shut down Songza

Those of you who’ve been enjoying Songza so far will have to say goodbye to the eight-year-old music service, as Google has decided to shut it down completely. Songza was purchased by Google in July, and over the course of the last few months, the company has managed to implement most of the service’s features into its own Google Play Music offering. Consequently, it just doesn’t make sense to keep both services up and running, which is why Songza will officially shut down starting January 31, 2016. The decision was also influenced by the competition, as Apple’s acquisition of Beats by Dr. Dre has boosted Apple Music’s popularity.

If you are a Songza user, then you should know that all of your playlists and favorited songs will be moved over automatically to Google Play Music, and if you happen to be a paid subscriber, you’ll also be offered access to YouTube Red for just $10 per month. After the transition, it looks like all four of Songza’s founders will continue to work on Google Play Music, which means that Google is actively trying to provide competition for Apple Music and its most important features.
