Google Ending Support for Chrome Apps

When it comes to your browser, the added experience that comes from add-ons and apps. If you’re like me and use a few of them for Chrome then you’ll want to start looking elsewhere after Googles latest announcement saying that they’ll be ending support for Chrome Apps.

Starting later in this year, new Chrome apps will only appear for Chrome OS users, meaning that anyone looking for a new app on Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems will find them missing.

This will only get worse for non-Chrome OS users as in the second half of next year they’ll find no Chrome Apps in the store. Come early 2018 and you won’t even be able to load the ones you have downloaded, leaving you without a single app for your browser.

Google stated that only 1% of users on Windows, Mac and Linux are actively using packaged apps, with a majority of users finding their features and games on websites all over the net instead of directly in their browsers.

While this change won’t effect extensions and themes, some users (even if they are just 1%) may be upset by a feature being removed completely. At least Google has been kind enough to inform people of the change, rather than just removing it suddenly.
