Google has recently acquired the IT firm Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition or PittPatt for short. Essentially, they are a company who specialise in developing computer software for facial recognition within photos and videos. Apparently Google has already use a lot of PittPatt computer vision software before in its image and video searching and categorising functions. PittPatt claimed the deal would be very beneficial for them as joining a company like Google brings many advantages which will allow them to improve their research and developments.
Terms of this deal have not been made public yet and nothing is certain in the context of why Google actually had to or wanted to purchase this company. Google clearly have plans whereby facial recognition software will be needed so expect to see some new features in the future from Google using facial recognition. Google did not respond to a comment request. For more on PittPatt’s technology see here.
