The end of the year is fast approaching and as often is the case at this time of year, we get a lot of top 10 lists. Google, however, has released one that might be more interesting than usual.
The search engine has released a number of top 10s for categories of most-searched items. While some of these are not unexpected, there are a few surprise additions to the list. Although, strangely enough, not much about themselves, despite a busy Google news year.
In a report via the Independent, the list is broken into different areas.
Not so much a case of ‘feeling lucky’ here. You can find below the top searches based on their area. So, for example Floyd Mayweather would come under sports and The Walking Dead is under television.
TOP 10 TRENDING QUERIES
Put simply, the top 10 searches which caused trending spikes. Presumably, the ranking is based on the height of the traffic spikes.
TOP 10 ‘HOW TO’ GUIDES
Each one of the following (preceded by ‘How to’) ranks what we wanted to know the most this year.
TOP 10 ‘WHAT IS’ QUESTIONS
We found out what we wanted to do, so what did we want to find out about? (Remember all questions are proceeded with ‘What is’).
TOP 10 NEWS EVENTS
The most searched for news stories of the year.
TOP 10 PEOPLE
Another easy one, the most searched for person/s of 2017.
TOP 10 TV SHOWS
Remember, this is Google searches. This list in no way reflects fact. That is clearly evident based on about two-thirds of this list.
TOP 10 FILMS
Again, remember. This is searched for, not fact.
TOP 10 – NUMBER 1’S
The most searched for number 1 singles. The Games of Thrones cameo making Ed Sheeran tops this one.
TOP 10 RECIPES
We have been a hungry bunch this year. Although, I do find it perhaps a little depressing that some people needed Google to find out how to make some of these. At least beans on toast didn’t make the list.
TOP 10 PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS
In a league table of their own, Google has compiled a Premier League results based on the search engine enquiries.
Despite all that Google has done this year, they don’t get a mention themselves I’m afraid. That isn’t, of course, taking the inception style query of Googling Google on Google. It does make us think though, what we will want to know or learn about next year.
