Google WiFi Home Mesh Router Arrives for $129

Adding on to the slew of wireless products from Google right before the holidays is the new Google WiFi, a smart, simple router designed to be used for hassle-free home mesh network. That of course involves purchasing multiples at $129 a pop, but as a lifestyle device, it is pretty much setup free and does not require any networking admin background to maintain.

Since the Google WiFi is a lifestyle product, it is designed to be a lot more compact and more presentable than a typical router with protruding antennas. In fact it just looks like two white hockey pucks stacked on top of each other and is palm-sized. The idea is to place multiple units in the house, providing seamless WiFi coverage throughout and with its size, it is practically unobtrusive or distracting since it can be placed almost anywhere in the room. While this setup may sound expensive, Google gives an approximation of 500-1500 square foot coverage per one unit, so that means a small apartment only needs one, while a medium-sized home that measures 1500 to 3000 square feet will get ample coverage with just two Google WiFi units.

Aside from the sleek design, the Google WiFi is also quite intelligent and is able to manage traffic without user input. Devices automatically connect to the fastest band deemed appropriate for the application and users are always connected to whichever Google WiFi point their device can perform the fastest on. The actual admin controls itself are available for both iOS and Android phones as an app so it is within reach and the app also allows for integration with other smart-home devices such as Philips Hue bulbs connected to the network.
