The PlayStation brand and the Gran Tursimo series are vital to each others existence, and while Gran Turismo 5 may not have been perfect, its always felt like a game that has belonged close to the PlayStation brand. I bought my first PlayStation 1 for Gran Turismo 1, I bought my PlayStation 2 for Gran Turismo 3, I bought my PlayStation 3 for Gran Turismo HD and eventually 5. So with the PlayStation 4 practically upon us, you would expect their to be a new Gran Turismo right around the corner for Sony’s next gen beast? Nope.
If rumours are to be believed, the new Gran Turismo is in fact in development for the PlayStation 3 and while this comes as a surprise, its a calculated and sensible thing to do for the developer. Gran Turismo is expensive to make and Polyphony Digital will be both wanting and needing to hit that large user install base that can be found near the end of a console life cycle. They will no doubt wait a couple of years for the next installment on the PlayStation 4, after the hardware has seen greater numbers of units sold, which at this time is of course zero units sold.
While no information on release date has been released, a sneakily listing on Newegg.com did list the PS3 edition of the game for pre-order.
The PlayStation 4 will launch with Drive Club, a western developed racing title that very nearly wore the Gran Turismo name, as almost a spin-off to the main series given their connections with Polyphony and the fact that both studios are first party Sony developers, this didn’t happen obviously, but it does raise some interest on how the two will compare. Drive Club on the PS4 vs Gran Turismo 6 on the PS4, one will out shine the other and that could lead to some confusion for both Sony and consumers on which way to spend their money, but only time will tell.
