Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR Port Put on Hold Indefinitely by Meta

The long-awaited virtual reality (VR) version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been put on hold indefinitely, according to a statement from Meta. This news comes nearly three years after the project was first announced for Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 headset.

Meta confirmed the development halt in a statement to IGN, saying, “GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future.” The announcement has disappointed many fans who have been eagerly awaiting updates since the project’s reveal in late 2021.

Development History

The VR port of San Andreas was expected to be a significant addition to Meta’s growing portfolio of VR titles, which previously included the successful adaptation of Resident Evil 4. However, the project’s development has been shrouded in mystery, with no substantial updates provided until now. The indefinite suspension raises questions about the future of VR projects at both Meta and Rockstar Games.

While Meta has not completely ruled out revisiting the project, the future of San Andreas VR remains uncertain. This decision also casts doubt on Take-Two Interactive’s broader VR ambitions, as the company had previously expressed interest in expanding its presence in the virtual reality space.
