GTA 6 Fan Investigates The SPF Sunscreen Used In The Trailer

I’m sure we all know the extreme lengths GTA fans went to find theories for GTA 6 analysing tiny details in previous GTA Online promotional material often leading to some pretty outlandish theories. Well with GTA 6 now in the open all the fans have turned to analysing the trailer for small details even going as far as trying to find out what SPF Sunscreen was used in the trailer.

Sunscreen in GTA VI?

As shared by PCGamer, a Reddit user by the name of ficerc in what I assume is an interesting use of their time off over Christmas, has done an in depth analysis of a short clip 21 seconds into the GTA 6 trailer where a woman on a beach is being sprayed with sunscreen. The goal of this analysis was to find out what SPF factor sunscreen was being used in the short clip assuming that they are using the right SPF for their skin and conditions based upon the Banana Boat sunscreen brand table as seen below.

Based upon this chart ficerc had to then figure out the skin tone and hours outdoors. They started with skintone and used another source to find the correct skin tone for the NPC as the Bananaboat chart doesn’t have any visual reference. The source they used was the Fitzpatrick Skin Score developed in 1975 by dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick. The VLS values used to calculate skin score were used to convert the 6 skin categories on this to the 5 skin categories on the BananaBoat chart. Placing the exact skin colour of the NPC into this chart places them between 30-32 VLS and under the dark category, I don’t think that required any more investigation than just looking at the NPC but hey ho.

Ficerc’s next job was to figure out the hours that this NPC would be spending outdoors which requires a closer look at the shadows in the scene during the trailer. To simplify Ficerc’s explanation, the long shadows established that this took place during a sun rise or sunset. To find out which, the shadows direction gave the answer of sunset as the sun sets in the West which would cause an easterly shadow on the NPCs. Using the 45 degree angle estimate of the sun, Ficerc eliminated the time down to 2 or less hours meaning this NPC is, or should be using 8-14 SPF.

I can’t imagine how long this took but this is one hell of a use of too much free time and I’m not sure anyone can one-up this level of trailer analysis, I wish I had this level of dedication to anything.

Be sure to check out the full Reddit post for the more detailed explanation of the process.
