Update – Rockstar Games has since officially confirmed the hacking incident. – See the image below. – Additionally, unconfirmed reports are saying that the hacker who obtained this data is a yet unnamed 16-year-old from the UK with prior offences for cyber attacks.
Yesterday saw what could’ve arguably represented the biggest leak in gaming history (presuming it was legitimate). Following the publication of various videos and screenshots, it appeared that masses of data from GTA 6 had been stolen. – While news on the situation is still coming out, the bottom line is that it appears that the source code from a development build (likely from March 2022) was obtained by a still unknown part, and, through its possessor now compiling it, it has started to get published online.
Now, given the absolutely masses of information appearing, it only really led to one of two possibilities. Either this was a legitimate leak of GTA 6, or it was the most elaborate hoax ever played on the gaming community. – Following comments from ‘@jasonschreier‘, however, he has confirmed that based on his sources at Rockstar Games, the leak is 100% entirely legitimate, and more so, staff at the studio are said to be devastated at the news!
As part of his comments, Jason Schreier has said:
“Not that there was much doubt, but I’ve confirmed with Rockstar sources that this weekend’s massive Grand Theft Auto VI leak is indeed real. The footage is early and unfinished, of course. This is one of the biggest leaks in video game history and a nightmare for Rockstar Games
To those who asked: There are several reasons this is a nightmare for Rockstar. One is that it’ll disrupt work for a while. Another is that it may lead management to limit work-from-home flexibility. The repercussions of this leak might not be clear for quite a while”
Additional sources have said:
“I’m sure its not needed but I’ve spoken to a couple sources at Rockstar Games this morning & they are all gutted. Devastated. Most are waiting till Monday to find out how leadership responds or what happens next but indeed this is the real deal.”
As noted above, the leak is clearly very hurtful not just to Rockstar Games, but also to its staff members who have undoubtedly (and gratefully) taken the opportunity to work remotely from home on the title. Following this breach, however, they might now find that option significantly curtailed, if not cut entirely, to prevent any future material leaking online. This will undoubtedly also lead to a lot of investigations to attempt to identify the source. A factor which could potentially delay work on GTA 6 and, ultimately, see it released much later than originally planned.
Yes, seeing leaks on a highly anticipated game such as GTA 6, which has run an exceptionally tight ship in terms of leaks to date, was always going to be incredibly popular news. In a roundabout way though, this has likely done more to harm GTA 6’s development than help! – If you do, however, want to get up to date with all of the latest leaks, we recommend you check out this Reddit post which has been doing an excellent job of updating itself as things get revealed.
