GTA 6 may not reach 60 FPS on PS5 at launch, and possibly not even on PS5 Pro, according to Mike York, a former Rockstar Games animator. In a recent interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast (thanks Push Square), York expressed doubts about the game achieving a frame rate higher than 30 FPS, considering the complexity of its open world.
GTA 6 May Be Locked at 30 FPS on PS5

York clarified that his opinion does not necessarily reflect reality, as he left Rockstar Games in 2017 and has not been involved in the development of GTA 6. However, his experience in the industry, having also worked for PlayStation Studios on titles like God of War Ragnarok, makes his insights noteworthy. He believes that achieving a high frame rate on PS5 could be challenging, at least at launch.
According to York, GTA 6 will likely be locked at 30 FPS on PS5, ensuring stable performance without frame drops. However, he speculated that once the game is released on PC, it could be better optimized and potentially reach 60 FPS with more powerful hardware and future updates.
Even PS5 Pro Might Struggle to Reach 60 FPS
Even for PS5 Pro, York remains skeptical. He explained that the console might not be able to guarantee 60 FPS unless it uses AI-powered upscaling technology similar to what PlayStation is currently developing. He added that he doubts the initial version of the game will offer a 60 FPS experience on consoles without significant technological assistance.
His reasoning is backed by the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2, another Rockstar title, has still not been able to reach 60 FPS on PS5, even seven years after its original release. This reinforces the idea that GTA 6 may face similar technical limitations, at least on current-generation consoles.
