With a bunch of Nvidia GTX 1080 samples running around, it’s inevitable that some pictures would come out. So far, all we’ve seen are a few limited snaps and official renders of the card. Finally, we are getting some sweet pictures of the actual card and not just of the cooler on top. Ahead of the May 17th embargo, pictures of the GTX 1080 PCB in all of its glory have been leaked out.
First off, we can tell that the GXT 1080 PCB looks a lot more like the 980 than the 980Ti. This is expected given the same 256bit memory bus and relatively low TDP. In fact, the reference GTX 1080 features 5+1 power phases, in between the 4+1 and 6+1 of the 980 and 980Ti respectively. Nvidia has also included room for an extra 8pin PCIe power connector. I doubt the utility of an extra connector as the card was able to hit 2.1Ghz with just 225W of power.
The die is also much smaller than the 28nm ones we’ve been used to. This drives home the fact that GP104 really is a mainstream die oriented as a flagship. We can expect GP100 derived GPUs to feature a much larger die though those cards won’t arrive till late 2016/early 2017.
