GTX 780 & Core i7 Powered Steam Machine Prototypes Tested

A few lucky members of the media have been allowed to get their hands on the Steam Machine prototypes for testing, since eTeknix haven’t been asked, we’ll have to go ahead and remove Valve from our Christmas card list. But on a more serious note, the hardware looks rather awesome.

The demo units were packing heat wit the GeForce GTX 780 and an Intel Core i7 and an unknown amount of ram, running Valve’s own Steam OS. Engadget and The Verge were lucky enough to get to test the hardware and initial impressions are promising. The chassis is aluminium and steel, measuring 30.5cm wide, 7.5cm high, features separate ventilation holes for both the GPU and GPU.

With 300 lucky gamers getting the console for testing very soon, we can only hope to be one of them as this looks like a great option for those who want to get some serious PC gaming action on the big screen and if the final retail unit looks like the demo hardware, which we have to admit looks awesome! Then Valve could be onto a real winner here.

The whole thing is still a prototype, this is still a testing phase and Valve hasn’t even begun production of their controller yet until they work out all the kinks. However, incredible performance in a sleek box like this is no bad thing and I’ll be saving up for a pre-order as soon as we have a release date.
