Gyrocycle: Self-Balancing Motorcycle Street Ready by 2017

A new prototype from ThrustCycle dubbed the GyroCycle is scheduled to be the first self-balancing motorcycle in the market once it is released in 2017. Although not as hands-free as self-driving cars, the self-balancing GyroCycle is able to be kept upright using internal flywheels which are in effect not only when the rider is in motion but when standing still as well, effectively eliminating the kickstand. Since the GyroCycle is self-stabilizing, this also improves rider balance and creates a smoother ride with significantly less likelyhood of losing traction during a turn.

A video demo of the GyroCycle, nicknamed the “Bumble Bee” is available on YouTube:

It may be the first to hit the market but they are not the only one with plans for such a device. BMW has announced earlier this year that an electric self-balancing motorcycle is also in the works as part of their Vision Next 100 line. Although the GyroCycle will have the price advantage as the estimated MSRP once it is released is only going to be $20,000. BMW for their part claims that their Motorrad Vision Next 100 electric motor bike will be worth it and significantly very advanced in its self-stabilization technology that a helmet will not be required to ride it.
