HBO is still reeling from a recent bout of cyberattacks resulting in 1.5TB of data stolen. The ‘Game of Thrones’ network’s security is once again called into question when their social media accounts appear to be under the control of a third-party late Wednesday night. Variety reports that the group OurMine took over the accounts and posted several offending tweets. The group is well-known for taking over media accounts over the years, including NetFlix and Marvel.
While this does not guarantee more episodes leaking, it puts the target on the company’s back. They are now seen as easy-pickings for hacking groups. The timing of the attacks is not a matter of coordination but rather, hacking groups seeing opportunity with lax security. The group which have been leaking yet-to-air episodes of Game of Thrones still hold several important items. This includes documents and scripts which could do plenty of damage on their own.
Game of Thrones is also not the only property HBO owns as they produce several other original TV series which could be the target of an attack later on. The company might not even need to worry about third parties leaking sensitive information, as Game of Thrones’ episode 6 of season 7 accidentally aired across Europe ahead of schedule. The mistake was inadvertently the fault of their HBO Nordic and Spanish services.
