Hackers Steal CSGO Skins Worth $700,000

Popular CSGO trading site CSGOEXO has reported that around $700,000 USD or £578,000, GBP worth of items have been stolen after they were hacked. The site has currently been taken offline following the hack and the owners are attempting to recover the items from Steam and Valve. The theft of the items has come as CSGO surges again in popularity beating its record for concurrent players on steam twice in one month.

CSGO

For those who don’t know much about the CSGO skins and trading mechanic, the shooter basically has its own economy online where in-game items like character skins, gun skins and other things like stickers can be sold online by players and like in this case they can be worth a lot of money.

The item’s value is determined by its rarity of it and something called the “float value” which is a measure of how often the item has been used in the game. An item that has 0.00 float is the most valuable. Items with a float of 1.00 are times the most used and are the least valuable.

One CSGO skin for the M4 called the “Howl” skin was sold in 2020 for $100,000 USD or £82,000 GBP.

CSGO Hack with $700,000 Stolen

CSGO skins are often traded between various sites and one such site CSGOEXO has been victim to a hack that has lost around $700,000 USD worth of skins. Which has resulted in the owners of the site temporarily taking it down.

“The CSGOEXO.COM website is temporarily down, as unfortunately $700,000 worth of skins were illegally stolen from the site in the early hours of February 15. We’ll do our best to restore the normal functioning of the website. We have already contacted Steam.”

The owners of the site say they have identified who was responsible for the hack and have provided links to the hackers steam accounts. The owners have not told us what skins were taken or given a date for when the site might be back up which means that people are locked out of their accounts and unable to trade.

The hack has come at a time of a surge in popularity for CSGO with the game breaking its own records for most concurrent players twice in the same month. On February 11th the game hit an all-time record with 1,302,219 players logging in. And just a little over a week later on February 19 it broke again with 1,324,800 players online.

If you want to play CSGO you can find it here on steam and join over a million daily players.
