Hacking Group Claim Responsibility for Pokemon GO Servers Being Down

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past month, you’ll know about Pokemon Go. The monster collecting augmented reality game has taken the world by storm, despite it’s staggered launch schedule around the world. Unfortunately for the mass of would be Pokemon trainers worldwide, the game has been plagued with server issues since it first launched in the US, but today a hacking group, PoodleCorp are claiming responsibility for the latest server outage.

While players around the world were taking to social networks decrying the server outage, a group known as PoodleCorp announced on Twitter that they were behind the server outage. The outage was caused by a DDoS or Distributed Denial of Service attack is a way that attackers can slow down or crash target servers by flooding them with more requests per second than they can handle, each one often crafted to occupy the server’s network interface as much as possible.

For those anxiously waiting the return of the servers, there is no clear timeframe on when they will be available at the time of writing, the official Twitter reporting that they will provide an update “soon”. It is unlikely this will be the last of the issues that Pokemon GO suffers courtesy of PoodleCorp, with user XO, leader of PoodleCorp, tweeting that “Just was a lil test, we will do something on a larger scale soon.”

With the amount of Pokemon GO players worldwide, it is hard to count the amount of people inconvenienced by this attack but it can be hoped that knowing another attack may be on the way, Niantic can shore up their servers for the future.
