Half-Life 2 & Dishonored Art Lead Viktor Antonov Has Passed Away
Not a particularly long news story today, but most certainly a sad one. It’s likely many of you do not know the name Viktor Antonov. However, you’ll most likely be very familiar with his work. Unfortunately, Viktor passed away this week at the age of 52. While no details of how he died have been revealed, it’s obviously still a tragic loss for his friends, family and the wider gaming community.
Viktor Antonov
His works included being the art director for iconic gaming franchises, including Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, both visually stunning and iconic games.
Former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw revealed the news on social media earlier today, but was unable to reveal any further details beyond that the “visionary art lead” had died. He added that “I didn’t want to say much till I felt it was confirmed, but I learned today that Viktor Antonov, our visionary art lead on HL2, has died,” and “I don’t have details. Just sadness. Brilliant and original. Made everything better.”
Half-Life 2
It’s incredible to see the influence of his work though, with Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Dishonored, Dishonored: Dunwall City Trials, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Fallout 4, Dishonored 2, Doom, and Prey. That’s a very exceptional CV, I think you’ll agree, and many of those games are loved by a large majority of the wider gaming community.
Our condolences go out to all his friends and family.
