Its fairly obvious by this point in the review that I really like Halo 4 and while it isn’t perfect it does deliver one of the finest gaming experiences on the Xbox 360 to date. Although when I say it isn’t perfect, its hard to put a pin on what exactly is wrong with the game, because there isn’t and I guess its more a case of getting used to what has been changed and improved since Halo 3 and Halo Reach.
The most impressive thing on offer from this game in my opinion is the graphics and the sound, its quite simply amazing what the developers at 343i have done with this game engine. As a big fan of Halo Reach I was amazed at what that game could do visually on the Xbox 360, yet that game suffered a few frame rate issues, massive reductions in level details and more when in co-op split screen. This isn’t the case with Halo 4 as split screen still keeps a massive amount of detail in the levels and many of the dynamic lights. The only co-op sacrifice appears to be a few less dynamic shadows and that is an impressive achievement for a console that has been around the block for more than a few years now.
Visually I would have to say this is the best looking Xbox 360 to date and I beg anyone who has played it to say otherwise over on our forums. The general level design, well detailed enemies and the stunning vistas of the planet you fight on provide endless eye candy from start to finish.
The sound track has also been re-imagined and while some people will miss the classic gun sounds, the new ones are more punchy and realistic in terms of what you hear matching the power of the weapon you fire. Voice acting, musical score and general sound effects have all been tweaked and improved and if your a gamer that has access to a surround sound system or a quality gaming headset, then you’re in for a real treat.
While I have completed the main story of the game, both on single player and extensive co-op game play, we have barely scratched the surface of what Halo 4 has to offer. With modes like Spartan Ops providing new missions for both single player and up-to four player co-op every week, there is always a new experience to explore in Halo 4. The multiplayer modes offer seemingly endless leveling and customization options that are sure to keep both myself and my girlfriend entertained for many months to come. Add to that the first DLC in early December and two more early next year and it seems Halo 4 is the game that just keeps on giving.
I highly recommend this game to all FPS fans and while it will entertain the Halo faithful that little bit more, this is still a great place for your first introduction to the world of Halo.
