Backwards compatibility is a really important feature on consoles and encourages players to upgrade to the latest hardware. Sadly, Microsoft encountered technical issues dealing with the older PowerPC architecture which prevented them from supporting backwards compatibility early on. Of course, Sony had similar problems and they haven’t found a way to support retail game discs from the previous generation. Somehow, Microsoft engineered a solution which works pretty well and supports a wide range of popular titles. However, there are occasions when the performance is lacklustre. For example, Halo Reach on the Xbox One suffered from major frame dips and noticeable stuttering.
Thankfully, Microsoft has just released a patch which significantly improves the game’s performance. According to the video below, the frame-rate remains solid at 30 and doesn’t drop into the mid-20s. Also, the frame times hover at 33ms and creates a more fluid user experience. This is fantastic news for those who want to enjoy Halo Reach and no longer own an Xbox 360. Microsoft deserves praise for offering backwards compatibility at no cost and ensuring the games run as expected. If you’re interested in playing Halo Reach again, I’d thoroughly recommend trying out the latest patch to enjoy the optimum experience. Interestingly, the game now runs even better than it did on the original hardware.
