Hands-on With Latest Nvidia Shield TV at CES 2017

The Nvidia Shield TV is a big deal, it’s 3x more powerful than its nearest rival, it offers 4K HDR support, Dolby Atmos support, and huge range of features for gaming. However, now it’s bigger than ever, no wait… smaller than ever! The new shield I freaking tiny compared to its first gen brother.

At its heart, it’s the same console, make no mistake, but it’s slimmer, smaller, lighter, cuter, but every bit still a powerhouse of entertainment. Of course, it does have a few new tricks, and at the same time we think it’s missing a few too. First up you’ll find you can now stream PC games in 4K HDR with ease thanks to the latest OS, while the controller and remote now work via the latest Bluetooth format, giving them greater battery life.

We played a lot on the Gamestream with Titanfall 2 running on a rig nearby, streaming the game over LAN. It worked flawlessly, but we expected it to given we’re big fans and users of the Shield TV at home.

The new bundle includes a controller as well as the remote as standard, which is awesome as peripheral availability hasn’t been a strong point for the Shield so far.

The new controller has a new angular design, it’s slimmer, lighter, has better battery life, the headset jack is now on the bottom not the back, and that’s all awesome. However, we’ve noticed they removed the scratch mouse, which we liked, but it’s hardly a deal breaker. I’m not fond of the angular design either, I like a smoother fitting controller in my hand, but that’s pretty subjective.
