Dark Souls – Prepare to die. Never was a game better named. Yes, I know, officially that’s the name of the DLC inclusive version, but still, when a game warns you of the difficulty in its title, you should take it seriously. There are, however, those to whom Dark Souls 1 isn’t apparently challenging enough. As such they have modded the game to make it even harder! One would think that they had lost their mind to the Abyss! Poor Artorius.
Yes and to be clear this difficulty spite isn’t the Epic Sax mod, but just incase you missed that, you can read it here. Oh alright, here’s the video too…
Having played (and completed) the entire souls series (even Demon Souls) whatever challenge was there, for me, has gone. That being said, I love Dark Souls. Now I’m not going to waste my time explaining how difficult the game is, the reality is, it’s not as bad as people make out. It’s definitely challenging, it’s definitely unforgiving, but there is a common factor throughout the series, it’s tough, but fair. I have never had a death in Dark Souls I thought was cheap. Sure, I’ve had some dumb deaths, but they have nearly always been due to my own stupidity or impatience.
It wasn’t until the series came to PC that I really fell in love with it. Well, not the 1st Dark Souls. It should also be noted that Dark Souls wasn’t even originally planned for a PC release. It was only fan pressure that got it made and in a ‘beware what you wish for’ tale, the port was poor. A challenge in itself is completing Dark Souls 1 without a controller.
The mod, called “gumbenzoin’s Enemy Placement” has been designed to not fundamentally change the game itself, but the enemy placements. Therefore instead of being able to cherry pick off the trash, you might find yourself ganged up on rather quickly. Best select your estus in advance of the hordes of skeletons.
The person who created the mod has said that it wasn’t out of any masochistic need to make the game harder. They simply wanted to make his experience playing with friends more fun.
One thing is clear, however, you play this mod be prepared to see “You Died” rather a lot more than you did before. You might be best sticking with Epic Sax.
