Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition Review

So overall then I was really happy with the HD-PVR, its a great looking and performing device, which are two things that go a long way to justifying its £150 price tag, which isn’t cheap by a long shot, but it is about on par for something with this level of features in regards to the resolutions it handles.

I can’t help but wonder if this device would have been better with some kind of support for digital storage, ok of course it would have, everyone loves more features for their money.  But with the addition of a USB socket you could use to add in a flash pen or similar device to record independent of a PC.  I understand this might not be possible due to technical limitations or the more obvious issue, its effect on the price, but rather than hold this as a negative thing, I just thing its worth reinforcing the point that you need your console, TV, PC and the HD PVR all next to each other to make this work, I can’t blame Hauppauge for this proximity issue though, as their device is still one of the best solutions on the market to the very trick technical problem of recording video games.

There are a lot of capture devices on the market, but non of them look anywhere near this good, while in a sense most of this device is just some very fancy wiring, its done superbly, meaning that even someone with a limited technical knowledge of AV equipment could have this setup and recording in no time, and thanks to its simple to use video editing software even a beginner can produce a final composition from their gameplay and have it uploaded or saved to their hard drive with ease, ready to show their friends just how many times they died on the Halo Reach LASO difficulty.

I’m going to award the Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition our Gamers Choice award, simply because it does exactly what it says on the box, with what looked to be a complex wiring nightmare quickly turning into an easy setup thanks to Hauppauge including everything I need, a really simple and well written installation guide all I had to worry about was playing my game and in the case of the video I captured in this review, not crashing my car too much.
