The HD 6930 was given a relatively quiet introduction as AMD didn’t want to disturb reviewers who are busy testing the new HD 7000 series graphics cards such as the HD 7970 consequently the HD 6930 launch was very quiet indeed and most markets won’t even see the card for a significant period of time. Asia is to get it first and the Chinese site Expreview has been reviewing the card by putting it up against the HD 6950 and GTX 560Ti graphics cards.
The Radeon HD 6930 is made from the 40 nm “Cayman” silicon, on which all the other HD 6900 series products are based. It features 1280 VLIW4 Radeon Cores, 1 GB or 2 GB of GDDR5 (depending on the model you buy) memory over a 256-bit wide memory interface, 80 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and clock speeds of 750 MHz on the core, 1200 MHz or 4.80 GHz effective on the memory. In testing against the HD 6950 the HD 6930 held its own relatively well considering the fact it is a much cheaper option. The HD 6930 is expected to retail at less than $200.
In comparisons against the GTX 560Ti (which we might add is a much more expensive card than the HD 6930) the card successfully managed to hold its own falling only about 7% behind when you exclude PhysX and CUDA designed games. Including PhysX and CUDA designed games like Metro 2033 and the new Batman it falls a fair amount further behind as you can see from the tables below.
