AMD have announced the release of the HD 6990M mobile graphics processing unit. According to AMD it will be 25% than any existing mobile GPU on the market currently. The HD 6990M will also bring CrossfireX support allowing for two HD 6990M’s to be used which will offer top end gaming performance for the notebook/laptop systems.
The card offers an impressive 2GB of GDDR5 memory alongside 1120 stream processors (1.6 teraFlops) which equates the card to the Desktop HD 6870 in architecture. The card will support resolutions of up to 2560 by 1600 and will utilise some of the latest technologies such as stereoscopic 3D, dual stream HD playback, Blu Ray 3D support and Direct compute 11.
Clock speeds are relatively modest which is part of the adaptation to reduce power consumption and make the GPU viable for laptop units:
715MHz Core Clock
3600MHz Memory Clock
115.2 GB/s Memory Bandwidth
Expect to see the HD6990M debut first in Alienware laptops such as the M17X or M18X.
