HDMI Forum Officially Confirms HDMI 2.0 Specification

The HDMI specification has seen a few updates since the solution was launched and while the 2.0 specification isn’t breaking news to those in the industry, it is now good to know that the hardware details have been finalised at that the HDMI 2.0 specification is ready to go into production / usage / whatever.

The new HDMI specifications were developed by the HDMI Forum and offer up a significant increase in bandwidth, which now sits at a peak of 18Gbps, more than enough to support features such as 4K@50/60 2160p. This comes with support for 32 channels of audio, dynamic auto lip-sync and extensions of CEC (Consumer Electronics Control).

The new system is completely backwards compatible with older HDMI specifications and will usher in a new range of HDMI 2.0 compatible devices, pushing forward the support for new audio and video features on consumer devices for the next few years, especially given the steady uptake of 4K technology as prices begin to fall.

“The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 Specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum,” said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, president of the HDMI Forum. “Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI Specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications.”

Thank you AVForums and HDMI for providing us with this information.
