Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is an action role-playing platform and puzzle game that was developed by Frozenbyte and was launched on August 20, 2015. As the successor of the highly appreciated Trine 2, this new game has some pretty big shoes to fill, and it certainly does not disappoint as far as graphics and gameplay are concerned. However, some players have been complaining recently about Trine 3’s length, which is roughly about 6 to 7 hours of play time. The developers acknowledged the problem and issued a statement in which they explain that it all had to do with funding.
You see, Trine 3 was entirely self-founded by Frozenbyte, and considering the fact that it cost $5.4 million to produce, the indie studio was faced with some serious limitations. In order to make the game as intended, Frozenbyte would have needed at least $15 million – a sum that they simply did not have.
“Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power has ended up costing nearly triple that of Trine 2 – over 5.4 million USD. We have squeezed everything we could into the game, there’s nothing left on the table. We initially had a much longer story written and more levels planned, but to create what we envisioned, it would have taken at least triple the money, probably up to 15 million USD, which we didn’t realize until too late, and which we didn’t have.”
Nonetheless, the game’s makers stated that they are ultimately proud of what they have managed to achieve on a limited budget.
“The finished Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power game might not be as long as we hoped initially, but something we are very proud of nonetheless, and generally around 6-7 hours is what we think new players will spend with the game on average.”
Do you think that Trine 3 is currently worth purchasing considering its length?
